Knightia is an extinct genus of fish that lived in freshwater lakes and rivers of North America and Asia during the Eocene epoch. It is the state fossil of Wyoming and the most frequently excavated fossilized fish in the world.
Knightia fish were related to herring and sardines, most likely feeding on algae and diatoms, as well as insects or small fish. They varied in size depending on the species. Knightia eocaena was the longest, growing up to 25 centimeters, although most specimens are no larger than 15 centimeters. Knightia alta was shorter and relatively wider, with specimens ranging between 6 and 10 centimeters in length.
