Authentic fossilized Basilosaurus tooth, 7.5 cm long, 40 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 499,99

Authentic fossilized Basilosaurus tooth specimen from Morocco, approximately 40 million years old, in a wooden box with a glass lid. Comes accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by a professional geologist who examined the specimen. This rare tooth belonged to a giant ancient predatory whale that dominated the oceans during the Eocene epoch. The incisors and canines of Basilosaurus were curved to grip moving fish and other aquatic mammals. A superb gift for any paleontology or aquatic mammal enthusiast!

Because whales do not replace their teeth during their lifetime and retain the same set throughout their lives, Basilosaurus teeth are far less numerous than those of dinosaurs or sharks, making them significantly rarer. Furthermore, larger teeth indicate older individuals that experienced greater wear during their lifetimes. This factor, combined with the immense timeframe since these whales existed, means that the vast majority of recovered Basilosaurus teeth require extensive repairs—a normal and inevitable aspect of these fossils. We invite you to examine the product photos carefully to identify natural imperfections and any potential restoration work on the specimen. This particular tooth is not repaired or restored in any way; it is in its natural state, exactly as discovered!

Description

Basilosaurus ("king lizard") is a genus of large, predatory primitive whales that lived from approximately 41.3 million years ago until about 33.9 million years ago, during the Eocene epoch. First described in 1834, Basilosaurus was the first prehistoric whale ever discovered. Fossils attributed to the type species Basilosaurus cetoides were first uncovered in the United States and were initially believed to belong to a giant reptile similar to Mosasaurus—which is why the name bears the suffix "-saurus", meaning "lizard" in Ancient Greek. Later, fossils of a second species, Basilosaurus isis, were discovered in 1904 across Egypt, Western Sahara, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, and Pakistan. Fossils of Basilosaurus isis have also been found in the southeastern United States and Peru.

It is believed that Basilosaurus was a common predator in the ancient Tethys Ocean. It was one of the largest animals of the Paleogene period and the apex predator of its environment, reaching lengths between 15 and 20 meters. Basilosaurus fed on sharks, large fish, and other marine mammals such as Dorudon, a dolphin-like creature that appears to have been its primary food source.
