Description
Meteorites are rocks from space that enter a planet's atmosphere and reach its surface. They are the result of incomplete combustion in the atmosphere of meteoroids – pieces of various sizes of iron and rock, resulting mainly from the collision of asteroids. Campo del Cielo is a class IAB-MG iron meteorite from the region of the same name in Argentina. It reached Earth 4,000–5,000 years ago and its estimated age is 4.5 billion years, dating back to the formation of our solar system. Its chemical composition is 92.6% iron, 6.67% nickel, 0.43% cobalt, 0.25% phosphorus, 87 ppm gallium, 407 ppm germanium and 3.6 ppm iridium – a composition not found on Earth.
