Authentic fossilized Plesiosaur tooth, 5.0 cm length, 70 million years old, Cretaceous, Morocco

RON 199,99

Authentic fossilized Plesiosaur tooth specimen from Morocco (most likely the species Zarafasaura oceanis), approximately 70 million years old. It comes in a plastic box, perfect for display, and is accompanied by a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who appraised the specimen. An excellent gift for a dinosaur or paleontology enthusiast!

Reptiles have teeth that are replaced many times throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel as well as the long span of time they inhabited the Earth, means that fossilized teeth of mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs are commonly found in various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Plesiosaurs are an order of large extinct marine reptiles that lived during the Jurassic period, 201–145 million years ago, and the Cretaceous period, 145–66 million years ago. The name comes from the Greek plesios – “near to” and sauros – “reptile”. Plesiosaurs are distinguished by a small head, a very long, slender neck, a large body, a short tail and two pairs of large, elongated flippers.

The plesiosaur teeth are simple, long and thin, slightly curved and circular in section. The tip is sharp, and their entire surface exhibits fine striations.

Plesiosaurs reached lengths of up to 15 meters and fed on cephalopods, fish, and other creatures; their teeth were specialized for catching fish. They moved through the water using fins, and their long neck may have been used for guidance while hunting. Plesiosaurs gave birth to live young in the water, like sea snakes. It is possible that the young lived in estuaries until they grew large enough to swim out to sea.
