Description
Snakes are limbless carnivorous reptiles that belong to the order Squamata. They appeared about 112 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, and are still alive today. They have elongated bodies covered with scales, and move by undulating. Most species are oviparous (lay eggs), but some are viviparous (give birth to live young). They are found on almost every continent, in a variety of habitats, from tropical forests to oceans and deserts. Snakes hunt prey using smell (using a forked tongue) and some species use venom for immobilization. They do not have movable eyelids or external ears, but they can detect vibrations.
Fossils show that the first snakes still had vestigial limbs (remains of legs), a sign that they gradually evolved towards their current form, ideal for slithering through narrow spaces and silent hunting and adapted for an underground or aquatic life.
