Rare authentic fossilized Ichthyosaur vertebra and rib fragment from Germany, approximately 180 million years old, in natural matrix. The specimen comes with a plastic display stand included and is accompanied by a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who appraised the specimen. A very rare natural fossil association, contemporary with dinosaurs, perfect for any collector and paleontology enthusiast!
Due to the age of the specimen and local extraction methods, the specimen may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition. The product consists of a single Ichthyosaur vertebra and a single Ichthyosaur rib fragmentfosilizate autentice în matrice naturală, cele din pozele de mai sus, și vine însoțit de un stand de plastic pentru expunere și de o broșură ce conține informații geologice și paleontologice specifice, precum și de un Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who examined the specimen.
Ichthyosaurs (ihtiozaur – “șopârla pește”) sunt un gen de reptile marine de pradă care au trăit de acum aproximativ 250 de milioane de ani, din perioada Triasică, până acum aproximativ 90 de milioane de ani, în perioada Cretacică. Ei au evoluat inițial dintr-un grup de reptile de uscat neidentificate care s-au reîntors în apă, similar cu modul în care s-au reîntors în apă strămoșii tereștri ai delfinilor și balenelor din ziua de azi. În urma acestei întoarceri în apă ei au preluat caracteristici și adaptări ale peștilor, fiind un exemplu excelent de evoluție convergentă. Ichthyosaurs were extremely widespread during the Triassic and early Jurassic periods, until their niche as aquatic top predator was taken over by Plesiosaurs.
Species of Ichthyosaurs aveau de la 1 la 26 de metri lungime și semănau atât cu peștii cât și cu delfinii moderni. Ichthyosaurs breathed air, were warm-blooded, and gave birth to live young. Many, if not all, species had a layer of fat for insulation.
