Authentic fossilized Carcharhinus sp. Shark tooth, 1.8 cm long, 40 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 44,99

Authentic fossilized Carcharhinus sp. shark tooth specimen from Morocco, approximately 40 million years old, in a plastic box. An excellent gift for anyone passionate about sharks or paleontology!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Carcharhinus sharks are a genus of sharks that have lived from the Eocene epoch, 42 million years ago, to the present day. They live in tropical and temperate waters, mostly near continental coasts, but also offshore. The genus name (Carcharhinus) derives from the Greek words karcharos, meaning “sharp”, and rhinos, meaning “nose”, because many species have pointed snouts.

Carcharhinus sharks have a robust body, with a rounded or triangular snout, and can reach up to approximately 3.3 meters in length. Their upper teeth are triangular and serrated, allowing them to slice, while their lower teeth are narrow with few serrations, well-suited for grasping prey. Most species feed on small fish and crustaceans, but larger requiem shark species can also prey on marine mammals.
