Authentic polished specimen of fossilized stromatolites from Germany, approximately 20.5 – 23 million years old. Comes with a plastic display stand. Stromatolites are not only interesting fossils, but also very beautiful decorative objects, perfect for display!

Due to its age, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are perfectly normal and inevitable for such an old fossil, but it is, overall, in good condition. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify the natural imperfections and any possible repairs to the specimen.

Age: approximately 20.5 – 23 million years ago, Miocene epoch

Country of origin: Rüssingen Formation, Germany

The product consists of a single authentic polished specimen of fossilized stromatolites – the one in the pictures above. The product comes with a plastic display stand and a brochure containing specific geological and paleontological information.

Description

Stromatolites Stromatolites are multi-layered calcareous structures, formed by thin overlapping layers, resulting from the biotic activity of cyanobacterial colonies. Stromatolites are among the first traces of life on Earth, among the first fossils. They can have a flat, conical, wavy, digital, columnar shape and a porous tubular or fenestrated internal microstructure.

Stromatolites formed in shallow waters with a low sedimentation rate, and helped terraform our planet by removing oxygen from the atmosphere, thus contributing to the explosion of life that followed.

In some areas of the world, such as Bolivia and the United Kingdom, fossilized stromatolites from various geological periods are mined and polished into jewelry and other ornaments. In Australia, in the famous Shark Bay, there are still active modern stromatolite colonies.
