Authentic fossilized Raptor/Abelisaur tooth, 1.3 cm length, 96 million years old, Cretaceous, Morocco

RON 199,99

Authentic fossilized Raptor/Abelisaur tooth specimen (small theropod carnivorous dinosaur, family Dromaeosauridae or Abelisauridae) from Morocco, approximately 96 million years old, in a plastic box. Comes with a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who appraised the specimen. An authentic dinosaur tooth, an excellent gift for any dinosaur or paleontology enthusiast!

Recent studies support the fact that some of these dinosaur teeth found in Morocco belong to the dinosaur family. Dromaeosauridae and others to the family Abelisauridae. However, because the morphological differences between the teeth of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs are very subtle, it is almost impossible to differentiate between the two families based on the teeth alone. In this sense, these small theropod carnivorous dinosaur teeth are still generically referred to as "Raptor/Abelisaur teeth" until conclusive information on their differentiation becomes available.

Reptiles have teeth that are replaced many times during their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of the enamel and the long time they lived, means that fossilized teeth of mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs are common in various parts of the world.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco and local extraction methods, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections), which are perfectly normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify any natural imperfections and repairs to the specimen.

Description

Raptors were carnivorous dinosaurs, members of the family Dromaeosauridae ("running reptiles" - in Greek), which lived mainly during the Cretaceous period, about 143-66 million years ago. They were small to medium-sized feathered dinosaurs that walked on two legs and hunted using speed, sharp claws and serrated teeth. They may have hunted in groups. Among the famous features of raptors is the oversized claw on their feet, probably used to attack prey and climb trees. The family is believed to Dromaeosauridae is believed to share a common ancestor with modern birds.

Famous raptor genera include: Velociraptor, Utahraptor and Deinonychus. In Morocco, there was a species of raptor whose teeth are frequently found by local fossil hunters. Unfortunately, in the case of the Moroccan raptor, Only teeth have been discovered, so its exact appearance and other physiological characteristics can only be theorized based on its belonging to the family Dromaeosauridae.

Raptors' teeth were sharp and serrated, optimized for tearing flesh. As with other reptiles, raptors replaced their teeth very frequently during their lives, even weekly.

Abelisaurs (“Abel’s lizard” – the family Abelisauridae) were a group of medium-sized, predatory theropod dinosaurs that lived mainly during the Cretaceous period (about 145 million years ago to 66 million years ago) in what is now South America and Africa.

Abelisaurs were bipedal carnivores that reached between 5 and 12 meters in length, depending on the species. They had two very short hands, with 4 fingers on each hand, and a tall and short skull, which could have various ornaments (hard ridges on the snout and above the eyes, horns, bony protrusions, etc.). These ornaments probably had a role in intimidation or identification of members of the species.
