Description
The burrfish (Chilomycterus sp.) is a genus of marine fish in the family Diodontidae, known from fossils dating to the Early Miocene, approximately 23–16 million years ago, with representatives still living today. These fish have rounded bodies covered with short spines and can inflate when threatened, making them harder for predators to swallow.
Their teeth are fused into strong dental plates, forming a beak adapted for crushing shells and carapaces. They feed on mollusks, crustaceans, and other marine invertebrates. These durable dental plates can be preserved as fossils and provide clues about the diet and diversity of fish in ancient seas.
