Description
Atlasaurus was a genus of herbivorous sauropod dinosaur that lived in the Middle Jurassic, about 165 million years ago, in North Africa. The name comes from the Atlas Mountains of Northern Morocco, where it was first discovered.
Atlasaurus is different from Brachiosaurus in the estimated length of its dorsal vertebral column, 3.04 metres, as well as in having a larger skull, a shorter neck, a longer tail and longer limbs. The teeth were spoon-shaped and had denticles. The lower jaw of an Atlasaurus measured approximately 69 cm, its neck approximately 3.86 m, its humerus approximately 1.95 m, and its femur approximately 2 m. Its length was estimated at 15 m and its weight at 22.5 tonnes.
