Description
Insects Insects are hexapod invertebrates that make up the largest group of arthropods. Insects have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax, and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, and a pair of antennae. They are the most diverse group of animals, with over a million described species, representing more than half of all extant animal species.
The nervous system of insects consists of a brain and a ventral nerve canal. Most insects reproduce by laying eggs. They breathe through a system of paired openings located along the sides of their bodies, connected to small tubes that carry air directly to the tissues. Insects see through their compound eyes, and many insects can hear using tympanic organs, which are located on their legs or other parts of their bodies. Their sense of smell is through receptors, usually on their antennae or mouthparts.
