Authentic fossilized Plesiosaur tooth and Sand Tiger Shark tooth in matrix, 5.4 cm tooth length, 70 million years old, Cretaceous, Morocco

RON 299,99

Authentic Plesiosaur tooth specimen (most likely the species Zarafasaura oceanis) and Sand Tiger Shark tooth (Carcharias tingitana) fossilized from Morocco, approximately 70 million years old, in matrix. Comes with a plastic display stand and is accompanied by a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who examined the Plesiosaurus tooth. The matrix is natural from Morocco, different from the one in which the Plesiosaurus tooth was originally discovered, but just as old, and may contain other fossil fragments! An interesting and exotic composite decorative piece!

Reptiles have teeth that are replaced many times during their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of the enamel and the long time they lived, means that fossilized teeth of mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs are common in various parts of the world.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Plesiosaurs are an order of large extinct marine reptiles that lived during the Jurassic period, 201–145 million years ago, and the Cretaceous period, 145–66 million years ago. The name comes from the Greek plesios – “near to” and sauros – “reptile”. Plesiosaurs are distinguished by a small head, a very long, slender neck, a large body, a short tail and two pairs of large, elongated flippers.

The plesiosaur teeth are simple, long and thin, slightly curved and circular in section. The tip is sharp, and their entire surface exhibits fine striations.

Plesiosaurs reached lengths of up to 15 meters and fed on cephalopods, fish, and other creatures, with their teeth being specialized for catching fish. They moved through the water using flippers, and their long necks may have been used for guidance while hunting. Plesiosaurs gave birth to live young in the water, like sea snakes. The young may have lived in estuaries until they grew large enough to cross to the open sea.
