Authentic fossilized XL Elosuchus crocodile tooth, 3.4 cm length, 100 million years old, Cretaceous, Morocco

RON 139,99

Authentic fossilized Elosuchus crocodile tooth specimen from Morocco, approximately 100 million years old, in a wooden box with a transparent lid. A great gift for someone passionate about paleontology!

Reptiles have teeth that are replaced many times during their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of the enamel and the long lifespans, means that fossilized teeth of mosasaurs, crocodiles, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs are common in various parts of the world.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Elosuchus is an extinct genus of crocodilian that lived in the Middle Cretaceous in what is now North Africa (Morocco and Algeria).

Elosuchus had an elongated, gharial-like snout. Its jaws contained conical teeth of unequal size set in sockets called alveoli. Its body was flattened dorsoventrally and covered with dermal plates reinforced by bony plates that were not fused together over the back. Its tail was laterally compressed. It was probably fully aquatic.

In general, modern-day crocodiles, caimans, gavials, and alligators have changed relatively little over time and are similar to their prehistoric relatives.
