Authentic Ammonite specimen Dactylioceras sp. — a polished fossil from Great Britain, approximately 180 million years old, in natural matrix. The specimen consists of half an Ammonite polished on the cut surface in natural matrix and comes with a plastic display stand included. A superb fossil, with impressive natural geometry, contemporary with the dinosaurs!

Due to its age, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are perfectly normal and inevitable for such an old fossil, but it is in good overall condition. Please carefully examine the product photos to identify natural imperfections and any possible repairs to the specimen.

Description

Ammonites are an extinct group of cephalopods related to octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, which appeared 400 million years ago, during the Devonian period, and went extinct 65 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, at the same time as the dinosaurs.

Members of this group had coiled shells of various sizes, made of aragonite, the mineral that also forms pearls. Their shells were divided into several internal chambers. They regulated buoyancy using gas in the shell chambers and propelled themselves by expelling water. Along with fish, they were prey for aquatic reptiles such as plesiosaurs and mosasaurs. Depending on the species, ammonites ranged from a few millimetres to 1.4 metres in diameter.

Ammonites are found fossilized in many locations around the globe, with those from Madagascar being particularly famous.
