Authentic stabilized fossilized Southern Mammoth tusk section, 10.6 cm diameter, 1.5 million years old, Pleistocene, Hungary

RON 649,99

Authentic stabilized fossilized Southern Mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis) tusk section from Hungary, approximately 1.5 million years old, with display stand included. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by a professional geologist who performed the expert evaluation of the specimen. The section has been infused with a stabilizing material to preserve its structural integrity, without which it would disintegrate. An excellent gift for a collector or any paleontology enthusiast!

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of fossil deposits in Hungary, and local extraction methods, the specimen may feature imperfections and repaired areas (bonded sections), which are completely normal and line-of-course for such material. Overall, however, it remains in good condition. We invite you to examine the product photos carefully to identify natural imperfections and any potential restoration work on the specimen.

Description

The Southern Mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis) was a species of mammoth that inhabited Eurasia during the Pleistocene epoch, from approximately 2.5 million years ago until about 800,000 years ago. It coexisted with early humans of the Acheulean culture, who hunted it for meat, bones, and tusks to craft primitive tools.

Male southern mammoths reached a shoulder height of between 3.97 and 4.05 m and weighed up to 10.7–11.4 tonnes, making them larger than modern elephants and their younger relative, the famous Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius).
