Description
Palaeocarcharodon appears to have been one of the main shark genera living after the Cretaceous period, during the Paleocene epoch, following the disappearance of predatory marine reptiles. It is thought to have been related to the shark Cretoxyrhina, which lived during the Cretaceous period, but scientists are particularly studying its connection to Carcharodon carcharias (Great White Shark) and Megalodon toothfish, the largest shark that ever lived.
Palaeocarcharodon teeth are triangular in shape, labio-lingually compressed, and exhibit irregular serrations as well as serrated lateral cusps. They can reach up to 3–6 cm in length and are highly sought after by collectors due to their exceptionally pronounced serrations.
