Description
Turtle is a reptile characterized by the presence of a bony shell, developed by modifying the ribs and other skeletal elements, which provides protection. Early forms of turtles are known from the Triassic period, about 220 million years ago, and the group is still alive today.
Turtles can live both on land and in water and can be herbivorous, omnivorous or carnivorous, depending on the species. They reproduce by laying eggs on land. Current turtles do not have teeth, but a horny beak, the edges of which are adapted to the type of food. Some early forms of turtles had teeth, which were lost during the evolution of the group.
