Description
Meteorites are rocks from space that enter a planet's atmosphere and reach its surface. They are the result of incomplete combustion in the atmosphere of meteoroids – pieces of various sizes of iron and rock, resulting mainly from the collision of asteroids. Sikhote-Alin is a class IIAB iron meteorite that fell in 1947 in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Russia. It is considered one of the largest and best-documented meteorite falls in modern history, as it was observed by numerous eyewitnesses. Before entering the atmosphere, its initial mass is estimated to have been approximately 100 tonnes. At an altitude of just 5.6 km, it exploded, scattering fragments over an area of 1.6 square kilometres. This event left over 100 craters, the largest measuring 28 metres in diameter. Its chemical composition is 93% iron, 5.9% nickel, 0.42% cobalt, 0.46% phosphorus and 0.28% sulphur, with traces of germanium and iridium.
