Authentic fossilized Basilosaurus jaw fragment with tooth, 3.1 cm tooth length, 40 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 999,99

Authentic fossilized Basilosaurus jaw fragment with tooth from Morocco, approximately 40 million years old. Comes with a plastic display stand and a Certificate of Authenticity signed by a professional geologist who examined the specimen. This jaw fragment belonged to a giant ancient predatory whale that dominated the oceans during the Eocene epoch. An extremely rare fossil and a superb gift for any paleontology or aquatic mammal enthusiast!

Because whales do not replace their teeth throughout their lives and live their entire lives with those they are born with, Basilosaurus teeth are far fewer in number than those of dinosaurs or sharks, making them much rarer to find. Furthermore, larger teeth indicate older specimens, which naturally experienced a higher degree of wear during their lifetime. This, combined with the vast amount of time that has passed since these whales lived, means that most Basilosaurus teeth found require a significant amount of repair—this is completely normal and unavoidable. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen. The present jaw fragment and associated tooth are natural, discovered together in the same location, having subsequently only been repaired with the tooth reattached to the jaw in its natural position. The assembly is not a composite; the tooth and jaw belonged to the same animal and are in their natural position!

Description

Basilosaurus ("king lizard") is a genus of large, predatory primitive whales that lived from approximately 41.3 million years ago until about 33.9 million years ago, during the Eocene epoch. First described in 1834, Basilosaurus was the first prehistoric whale ever discovered. Fossils attributed to the type species Basilosaurus cetoides were first uncovered in the United States and were initially believed to belong to a giant reptile similar to Mosasaurus—which is why the name bears the suffix "-saurus", meaning "lizard" in Ancient Greek. Later, fossils of a second species, Basilosaurus isis, were discovered in 1904 across Egypt, Western Sahara, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, and Pakistan. Fossils of Basilosaurus isis have also been found in the southeastern United States and Peru.

It is believed that Basilosaurus was a common predator in the ancient Tethys Ocean. It was one of the largest animals of the Paleogene period and the apex predator of its environment, reaching lengths between 15 and 20 meters. Basilosaurus fed on sharks, large fish, and other marine mammals such as Dorudon, a dolphin-like creature that appears to have been its primary food source.
