Description
Corals are marine invertebrates that live in compact colonies made up of many polyps connected by calcareous channels. After the polyps die, another calcareous skeleton is added to the old one, a process that leads to the formation of coral reefs – some of the most important marine ecosystems.
Hexagonaria is a genus of wrinkled colonial coral that lived during the Devonian period, about 350 million years ago. Specimens of Hexagonaria can be found mostly in the Traverse Formation of Michigan or in Morocco. Polished fossils of this coral form Petoskey stones, the official state stone of Michigan.
