Corals are marine invertebrates that live in compact colonies made up of many polyps connected by calcareous channels. After the polyps die, another calcareous skeleton is added to the old one, a process that leads to the formation of coral reefs – some of the most important marine ecosystems.
Lithostrotion is a genus of rough coral, commonly found as a fossil in limestone. The genus Lithostrotion, a common and easily recognizable fossil group, became extinct at the end of the Paleozoic Era, about 251 million years ago.
