Description
Lobsters are a family of marine crustaceans with long bodies and muscular tails that live in crevices or burrows on the sea floor. They appeared about 140 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, and are still alive today. Lobsters have five pairs of legs, the front three pairs of which have claws, and the front ones are much larger than the others. Although lobsters are mostly bilaterally symmetrical, like most arthropods, some genera have unequal and specialized claws.
Lobsters are invertebrates with a hard, protective exoskeleton, and like most arthropods, they must molt in order to grow, during which time they are vulnerable. During the molting process, some species change color.
Lobsters are primarily scavengers, but they also feed on live fish, small mollusks, invertebrates, and marine vegetation. Using their large pincers, they can crush mollusks to feed on them at night. Lobster blood is light blue in color.
