Authentic fossilized Oviraptor dinosaur egg (Heyuannia sp.), 12.6 cm length, 66 – 71 million years old, Cretaceous, China

RON 999,99

Authentic fossilized theropod dinosaur egg of the genus Macroolithus yaotunensis from China, approximately 66–71 million years old. These eggs are found in large quantities in the Nanxiong Formation of China and have been associated with dinosaur remains. Oviraptor, possibly belonging to the genus Heyuannia sp. The egg is natural, has no restorations, is not artificially colored, is not sculpted, only a few pieces of shell detached from the matrix have been carefully glued back into place. The egg in question is composed of the eggshell left after the dinosaur chick hatched, which mineralized along with the sediments deposited inside. The specimen is accompanied by a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who appraised the specimen. An exceptional collector's item and a superb gift for any dinosaur and paleontology enthusiast!

Originating from China, the specimen was acquired from Europe, from an old European collection.

Fossilized dinosaur eggs consist of an outer shell composed of the fossilized organic layers of the egg (the eggshell as well as various soft internal layers) and an interior formed of a matrix of sedimentary rock, deposited over time, which helps to solidify and preserve the shape of the egg. In very rare cases, fossilized remains of the embryo can also be found inside. Herbivorous dinosaur eggs (sauropod, hadrosaur, etc.) are usually round in shape, with a relatively smooth shell, while carnivorous dinosaur eggs (theropod) are usually elongated in shape, with a textured shell, dotted with small protrusions, which contain microscopic holes through which the embryo could breathe.

Due to its age, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) which are perfectly normal and unavoidable, but it is, overall, in good condition. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify the natural imperfections and possible repairs of the specimen.

Description

Oviraptor is a genus of dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, in Asia, approximately 84–66 million years ago. The Oviraptor was a fairly small feathered dinosaur, estimated to be 1.6 m long, weighing between 33 and 40 kg. It had a broad lower jaw, with a robust skull, on which there was probably a crest. Both the upper and lower jaws were toothless and formed a beak that was used during feeding. The arms were well developed and elongated and ended in three fingers with curved claws. The hind limbs were long and ended in four-toed paws, with the first finger small in size. The tail was probably not very long and ended in a tuft formed by large feathers.

Due to the morphology of its beak, which is very similar to that of modern parrots, it most likely fed on fruits and seeds, but there are also theories that propose that it was omnivorous, as the beak could also have been capable of being used for cutting. Eggs of Oviraptor are extremely numerous in the Nanxiong Formation of Guangdong Province in China, and the nests of Oviraptor they are extremely well organized and have a highly specific architecture, the role of which has not yet been fully understood.

When it was first described, Oviraptor was interpreted as an egg thief, a dinosaur that fed on the eggs of others, given the close association of its remains with dinosaur nests. Hence its name (the name of Oviraptor is composed of the Latin terms for "egg" and "robber"). Later, the discovery of numerous fossils of Oviraptors in a nesting position demonstrated that this dinosaur actually brooded on nests, which were actually its own, it did not steal or feed on eggs.
