Authentic fossilized dinosaur egg, Dendroolithus genus (Segnosaurus galbinensis), 10.0 cm length, 72 million years old, Cretaceous, China

RON 999,99

Authentic fossilized egg of a herbivorous theropod dinosaur of the genus Dendroolithus from China, about 72 million years old, which most likely belonged to the dinosaur species Segnosaurus galbinensis. The egg is natural, not artificially colored, not carved, it is simply stabilized using a stabilizing substance that helps it maintain its cohesion and without which it would disintegrate. The present egg is composed of the eggshell left over after the dinosaur’s egg hatched, which has mineralized along with the sediments deposited inside. The specimen is accompanied by a Certificate of authenticity signed by a professional geologist who conducted the specimen’s expert analysis. An impressive fossil, perfect for any collector and passionate paleontologist!

Originating from China, the specimen was acquired from Europe, from an old European collection.

Fossilized dinosaur eggs consist of an outer shell composed of the egg's fossilized organic layers (the eggshell as well as various soft internal layers) and an interior formed from a matrix of sedimentary rock, deposited over time, which contributes to the solidification and preservation of the egg's shape. In very rare cases, fossilized embryonic remains can also be found inside. The eggs of herbivorous dinosaurs (sauropods, hadrosaurs, etc.) typically have a rounded shape with a relatively smooth shell, whereas those of carnivorous dinosaurs (theropods) usually have an elongated shape with a textured shell dotted with small ridges containing microscopic pores through which the embryo could breathe.

Due to its age, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) which are perfectly normal and inevitable, but overall, it is in good condition. We invite you to carefully inspect the product photos to identify natural imperfections and any potential repairs to the specimen.

Description

Segnosaurus is a genus of therizinosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Mongolia and China during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 102–86 million years ago.

Segnosaurus was a large-bodied therizinosaur with an estimated length of approximately 6–7 meters and a weight of about 1.3 tonnes. It was bipedal, with its trunk inclined upward, a small head with a beak at the tip of the jaws, and a long and slender neck. The lower jaw was turned downward at the front, and the teeth were distinguished by having additional denticles, as well as a third cutting edge on some of the back teeth. The anterior limbs were robust and had three digits bearing very large claws, and the legs had four toes supporting each foot – all theropods, apart from therizinosaurs, had three-toed feet.

Segnosaurus and his relatives as well Therizinosaurus were slow-moving animals that, as their unusual characteristics indicate, were mainly herbivores, occasionally omnivores, while the majority of the other groups of theropods were carnivores. Segnosaurs probably used their long forelimbs, long necks, and beaks to feed on the vegetation in the trees.

Dinosaur eggs containing embryos, assigned to the egg type Dendroolithus from the Nanchao Formation in China were identified as belonging to therizinosaurs and described by Martin Kundrát and his colleagues in 2007. The development of the embryos and the fact that no adults were found associated with the nests indicate that the therizinosaur hatchlings were precocial (capable of locomotion at birth) and could leave their nests to feed themselves independently of their parents.
