The Carboniferous was a geological period that lasted from about 359 million years ago to about 299 million years ago. This period is characterized by an explosion of plants, especially the appearance of the first large trees, which formed immense forests. When these old forests died, they were buried underground along with the carbon they had extracted from the atmosphere, fossilized, and became the present-day coal deposits, hence the name of the period.
