Authentic fossilized Parotodus sp. False Mako Shark tooth, 2.2 cm length, 50 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 119,99

Authentic fossilized Parotodus sp. shark tooth specimen from Morocco, approximately 50 million years old, in a plastic box. A very old tooth from a very rare and mysterious species of prehistoric shark! Parotodus shark teeth are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity.

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the tooth may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are perfectly normal and inevitable, but it is, overall, in good condition, with the enamel layer almost intact. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify the natural imperfections and any repairs to the specimen.

Description

The Parotodus shark, also known as the "false" Mako shark, is an extinct genus of shark in the order Lamniformes. It lived from about 53 million years ago to about 1.1 million years ago, from the Eocene epoch to the Pleistocene epoch.

Parotodus appears to have originally been a small shark that increased in size over time, reaching up to approximately 7.6 meters in length. Its teeth feature a distinctive curvature and rarely show signs of wear, suggesting a diet composed largely of soft-bodied animals. Parotodus teeth are highly valued among fossil collectors due to their scarcity. Their rarity suggests that these sharks preferred living in the open ocean, far from the continents.

Also due to the rarity of fossils, it is not known for certain which family Parotodus belonged to. A few proposals include Otodontidae, Cardabiodontidae, Archaeolamna, thresher sharks, or white sharks.
