Authentic fossilized Otodus shark tooth in matrix, 9.0 cm tooth length, 50 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 159,99

Authentic specimen of a fossilized Otodus shark tooth from Morocco, approximately 50 million years old, in matrix. Comes with a plastic stand for display. The matrix is natural Moroccan matrix, distinct from the one in which the tooth was originally discovered, but equally ancient. It may also contain other fossils from the same period (fish/shark bones/vertebrae, etc.) – see product photos. An interesting and exotic composite decorative piece!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Otodus is a genus of extinct sharks that included ancestors of Megalodon, the largest shark known to have lived on Earth. These sharks lived after the non-avian dinosaurs, from the Paleocene, approximately 60 million years ago, until the Miocene, approximately 23 million years ago.

The Otodus shark was a top predator of its era, consuming marine mammals, fish, and even other sharks. Specimens of this group of sharks could reach lengths of up to 12 meters.

Its teeth are found mainly in Morocco, can measure between 1–10 cm in length, and feature a triangular dental crown with two small side cusps. They may also exhibit serrations along the sides, thus marking the transition toward the famous Megalodon.
