Authentic fossilized Galeocerdo aduncus Tiger Shark tooth, 1.7 cm length, 27.5 million years old, Oligocene, USA

RON 44,99

Authentic fossilized Galeocerdo aduncus tiger shark tooth specimen from the USA, approximately 27.5 million years old, in a plastic box. An excellent gift for anyone interested in sharks or palaeontology!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen and the fragmentary nature of fossil deposits in the USA, as well as local extraction methods, the tooth may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) which are perfectly normal and inevitable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer almost intact. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify natural imperfections and any potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo sp.) is a genus of shark that has lived from the Paleocene epoch, 65 million years ago, until present day. It is a large-sized shark, with females reaching over 5 meters in length. Its name comes from the dark stripes along its body, which resemble those of a tiger. These fade as the shark reaches maturity. The Tiger Shark lives in temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions, particularly around the Central Pacific Islands.

Tiger shark teeth have a unique shape, with a distinctive tip curved sideways, and with very sharp, pronounced serrations. This type of tooth evolved to cut through flesh, bone, and other hard surfaces, such as a turtle shell. The Tiger Shark has long fins for better maneuverability in the water, while its long tail provides excellent speed.

The Tiger Shark is an apex predator and eats almost anything, including terrestrial mammals, as it swims close to the shore at night and descends into deeper waters during the day.
