Authentic fossilized Knightia eocaena fish in matrix, 9.0 cm fish length, 50 million years old, Eocene, USA

RON 189,99

Authentic specimen of a fossilized Knightia eocaena fish from the USA, approximately 50 million years old, in a natural matrix. It is the state fossil of Wyoming and the most commonly excavated fossil fish in the world. Comes with an included plastic display stand.

Due to the age of the specimen and local extraction methods, the specimen may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections), which are perfectly normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition. The fish has not been restored or painted; it is in its natural state, exactly as it was found! Only matrix stabilization and repairs (glued sections) may be present. We invite you to carefully examine the product photos to identify the specimen’s natural imperfections and any repaired areas.

Description

Knightia is an extinct genus of fish that lived in the freshwater lakes and rivers of North America and Asia during the Eocene epoch. It is the state fossil of Wyoming and the most commonly excavated fossil fish in the world.

Knightia fish were related to herring and sardines, most likely feeding on algae and diatoms, as well as insects or small fish. They varied in size depending on the species. Knightia eocaena was the longest, growing up to 25 centimeters, although most specimens are no larger than 15 centimeters. Knightia alta was shorter and relatively wider, with specimens ranging between 6 and 10 centimeters in length.
