Description
Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo sp.) is a genus of shark that has lived from the Paleocene epoch, 65 million years ago, until present day. It is a large-sized shark, with females reaching over 5 meters in length. Its name comes from the dark stripes along its body, which resemble those of a tiger. These fade as the shark reaches maturity. The Tiger Shark lives in temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions, particularly around the Central Pacific Islands.
Tiger shark teeth have a unique shape, with a distinctive tip curved sideways, and with very sharp, pronounced serrations. This type of tooth evolved to cut through flesh, bone, and other hard surfaces, such as a turtle shell. The Tiger Shark has long fins for better maneuverability in the water, while its long tail provides excellent speed.
The Tiger Shark is an apex predator and eats almost anything, including terrestrial mammals, as it swims close to the shore at night and descends into deeper waters during the day.
