Handmade necklace with Authentic fossilized Cretalamna maroccana shark tooth, 2.8 cm pendant length, 50 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 34,99

Handmade necklace with an authentic fossilized Cretalamna maroccana shark tooth pendant on a silver-colored metal chain. The tooth is approximately 50 million years old and comes from Morocco. A unique opportunity to wear a special piece of jewelry with an impressive past!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Cretalamna (also known as Cretolamna) is an extinct genus of otodontid shark that lived from approximately 103 million years ago to around 46 million years ago, spanning from the Late Cretaceous to the Eocene. Many consider it to be the ancestor of the largest sharks that ever lived, Otodus angustidens and Otodus megalodon.

Cretalamna was a medium-sized shark, with a total length estimated at 2.3–3 m. It is thought to have had a spindle-shaped body comparable to that of modern lamniform sharks, as indicated by its circular vertebrae.

Cretalamna teeth are distinguished by a broad central triangular cusp and two smaller lateral cusplets. The edges of the teeth are razor-sharp, while the sides have a smooth surface. Tooth symmetry varies—some exhibit exact bilateral symmetry, while others show high asymmetry. Adjacent teeth do not overlap.
