Authentic rare fossilized Weltonia ancistrodon Cow Shark tooth, 1.2 cm length, 50 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 74,99

Authentic rare fossilized Weltonia ancistrodon cow shark tooth specimen from Morocco, approximately 50 million years old, in a plastic box. An excellent gift for a collector or anyone interested in sharks or palaeontology!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Cow sharks are a family of primitive sharks characterized by extra pairs of gill slits. They appeared at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 75 million years ago, and are still found today.

Modern cow sharks are considered the most primitive of all sharks, as their skeletons resemble those of their ancient relatives, with few modern adaptations. Their excretory and digestive systems are also unspecialized, suggesting that they may be similar to those of their primitive ancestors.

The body of adult cow sharks ranges from 1.4 m to 5.5 m in length. The most distinctive feature of these sharks is the presence of a sixth and, in some cases, a seventh gill slit, as opposed to the five found in all other sharks. Cow sharks are ovoviviparous, with the mother keeping the eggs in her body until they hatch. Cow sharks feed on relatively large fish of all kinds, including other sharks, as well as crustaceans and carrion.
