Authentic fossilized XL Hemipristis serra shark tooth, 2.7 cm long, 2.5 – 22 million years old, Pliocene/Miocene, USA

RON 129,99

Authentic fossilized Hemipristis serra shark tooth specimen from the USA, approximately 2.5–22 million years old, in a plastic box. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by a professional geologist who assessed the specimen. An ancient tooth from a formidable predator!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the tooth may have imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are perfectly normal and inevitable, but it is, overall, in good condition, with the enamel layer almost intact. We invite you to carefully study the product photos to identify the natural imperfections and any repairs to the specimen.

Description

Hemipristis shark is a genus of weasel sharks in the family Hemigaleidae, which has lived from the middle of the Eocene epoch, about 40 million years ago, to the present. The modern species, Hemipristis elongata, can reach lengths of up to 2.4 meters, but Hemipristis serra, the gigantic species that lived in the Miocene epoch could reach up to 6 meters in length.

The shark Hemipristis elongata feeds on fish, cephalopods and other sharks, while Hemipristis serra, the extinct species, fed on manatees and possibly juveniles of the giant shark Megalodon , which lived at the same time and shared its habitat. The shark Hemipristis elongata is famous for its serrated teeth, and those of the extinct species, Hemipristis serra, are highly sought after by collectors for their pronounced serrations and vivid colors.
