Description
The Tapir is a genus of herbivorous mammal that inhabits tropical regions in South America, Central America, and Asia. It first appeared during the Eocene epoch, approximately 50 million years ago, and survives to this day. It features a massive body similar to that of a pig, smooth skin, and an elongated upper lip and nose forming a short trunk-like proboscis. This elongated nose is used to grasp branches and strip off leaves for feeding. The largest modern tapir species, the Malayan Tapir, can reach 2.5 meters in length and weigh up to 250 kg.
Several kinds of tapir lived in Florida during the Pleistocene, closely resembling species alive today. Their molars are relatively easy to identify by their distinctive ridges and low crowns, features associated with a herbivorous diet.
