Authentic rare fossilized Alopias latidens Thresher Shark tooth, 1.9 cm long, 40 million years old, Eocene, Morocco

RON 49,99

Rare authentic specimen of fossilized Thresher Shark tooth (species Alopias latidens) from Morocco, approximately 40 million years old, in a plastic box. A great gift for a collector or someone passionate about sharks or paleontology!

Sharks have a vast number of teeth arranged in multiple rows, which are replaced frequently throughout their lives (even weekly). This, combined with the durability of enamel and the extensive period they have existed, makes fossilized shark teeth commonly found across various parts of the globe.

Due to the age of the specimen, the fragmentary nature of the fossil deposits in Morocco, and local extraction methods, the tooth may exhibit imperfections and repaired areas (glued sections) that are completely normal and unavoidable, but it is overall in good condition, with the enamel layer nearly intact. We invite you to carefully review the product photos to identify any natural imperfections or potential repairs on the specimen.

Description

Thresher sharks are a genus of sharks that appeared in the Eocene epoch, 50 million years ago, and still exist today. Currently, they are found in all temperate and tropical oceans of the world.

Thresher sharks are named after their very long caudal fin (or tail), which can be as long as their entire body. The tail is used as a weapon to strike and stun prey. Thresher sharks have a short head and a conical snout. Their mouth is generally small, and their teeth vary in size, from small to large. The largest modern thresher shark is Alopias vulpinus, which can reach up to 6.1 meters in length and a weight of over 500 kg.

Thresher sharks are fairly slender, with small dorsal fins and large, curved pectoral fins. Except for the bigeye thresher shark, these sharks have relatively small eyes positioned at the front of the head. Coloration ranges from brownish gray, blue, or purple on the dorsal side, with lighter shades ventrally.
